What conditions does Neurofeedback work for?

There have been many scientific studies and controlled studies into the treatment of various disorders with Neurofeedback. Neurofeedback has proven to be very successful in the treatment of sleep disorders and ADHD/ADD. Neurofeedback for the treatment of ADHD/ADD has been very successfully used clinically for over 30 years and is an evidence-based – or proven effective – treatment as shown in a recent meta-analysis. The effects on symptoms are similar to those of medication. But unlike medication, the effects of Neurofeedback are permanent.

Does Neurofeedback have a long-term effect?

Studies into the long-term effects of Neurofeedback show that the symptoms after the Neurofeedback treatment first improve even further and then remain stable. Research shows that the scores for attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity improved even further after 6 months and remained stable after 2 years.

How effective is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is effective in about 75-80% of clients.

Do I get shocks from the electrodes placed on my head?

No, the electrodes can only be used to collect and/or measure the currents in your head. They cannot discharge any electrical current into your head.

Do I need a referral letter from the general practitioner to get treatment?

A referral letter is not required to come to us for treatment. In order to be able to have the treatment (partially) reimbursed by your insurer / or the municipality, please ask your health insurer (in case of adults). In the case of children, any reimbursements will be made via your municipality as of 2015. Ask your municipality about this.

Do I need a diagnosis to get treatment?

In general, this is not necessary for Neurofeedback. The main focus is on the symptoms and brain activity. For the insurer/commune this may be necessary for reimbursement.

For whom is Neurofeedback suitable?

Neurofeedback is suitable for children from 6 years of age, adolescents and adults who suffer from sleeping problems and/or AD(H)D related complaints (concentration problems and impulsiveness).

What is tele-Neurofeedback?

Tele-Neurofeedback makes it possible to train clients at home in their own environment. The client sits down at his or her computer at home and starts the training via the internet while the therapist is watching from our practice and is in contact by phone. Where necessary, the client is immediately adjusted.
The advantage of this form of therapy is that the client is not bound to visit our practice before every session. This often saves a lot of travel time and travel costs.
In consultation with you we can see if you are eligible for this.

Why is brain mapping (QEEG) necessary?

The underlying causes of AD(H)D-related complaints and/or sleeping problems are unique in everyone. Different patterns can be seen in the brain waves, even in people with ADHD or ADD who can suffer from the same symptoms. Because of the differences in brain waves, personalized neurofeedback is required. By means of the QEEG it is possible to determine for each client which brain activity can be trained and what fits his/her brain activity. This is also called Personalized Medicine.

How many sessions are needed?

On average, one needs 30-40 sessions. The best effect of the Neurofeedback treatment will be achieved by following an average of 2-3 sessions per week. Usually there should be a noticeable effect within 10-20 sessions.

What are your opening hours for Neurofeedback sessions?

Appointments can be made between 9.00 and 17.00, Monday to Friday. This also applies to tele-Neurofeedback.

Is there a waiting list?

The length of the waiting list varies. The waiting time does not depend on diagnosis and does not differ per insurer. The current waiting times are updated on a monthly basis for each branch. In general, the more flexible you are in your time, the sooner we can schedule an appointment for you.

What are the costs of Neurofeedback?

To get an answer to this question we refer you to the page with rates and fees of the location where you want to be treated.

Is Neurofeedback reimbursed by the insurer?

For adults: neuroCare Nederland carries out treatments in the Basis GGZ (BGGZ) and Specialist GGZ (SGGZ). BGGZ is intended for short-term and less complex problems, SGGZ for more complex problems where longer-term and more specialised care is required.

Neurofeedback treatments fall under SGGZ problems. If there is an indication for Neurofeedback treatment, this always falls apart into a psychotherapy part and a Neurofeedback part. The psychotherapy part is part of ‘reimbursable care’ and can be submitted to your health insurer. The Neurofeedback part concerns ‘non-reimbursable care’ and is at your own expense. If you do not have a referral, you can come to treatment but the entire process (diagnostics, psychotherapy and possibly Neurofeedback) is at your own expense.

For children: For children under the age of 18, any reimbursement of the care from 2015 onwards will be the responsibility of your municipality. Ask your municipality whether the basic mental health care (GGZ) is eligible for reimbursement. It is possible that the care falls within the scope of a PGB.

Should I stop the medication during the treatment?

During Neurofeedback treatment, you may continue to use your medication.

Can I start reducing medication during the treatment?

It is possible to reduce medication during the Neurofeedback treatment when it shows good results. For stopping or reducing your medication we always refer you to your prescriber for advice.
